Commitment to achieving Net Zero
Malvern Optical is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050, ensuring sustainability remains central to our operations and future growth.
Baseline Emissions Footprint
Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

| Our organisation’s baseline emissions have been established with consideration of several historical and structural factors. At the time of creation, we recognised that our operational profile was evolving, with new service areas emerging and an expansion of existing activities expected to materially alter our emissions footprint. Establishing the baseline ahead of this period of growth allowed us to create a stable and transparent reference point that accurately represents the organisation prior to these changes. This ensures that future emissions trends can be assessed reliably and that the effects of business growth and diversification can be clearly distinguished from genuine carbon-reduction progress. Overall, this baseline provides a robust foundation for monitoring future emissions reductions and aligns with current best practice and reporting standards. | |

Subset of Scope 3 Emissions Reporting
In accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard, Malvern Optical has provided below a breakdown of the required subset of Scope 3 emissions.

4. Upstream transportation and distribution | 0.1 | 0.1 |
5. Waste generated in operations | 0.5 | 1.5 |
6. Business travel | 0.3 | 0.6 |
7. Employee commuting | 1 | 1.4 |
8. Downstream transportation and distribution | <0.1 | <0.1 |
Emissions reduction targets
Our reported carbon emissions have increased this year due to more accurate measurement and changes in our operations.
In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets, in a bid to reducing our carbon emissions, cutting them by 50% by 2030, and achieving Net Zero by 2050.
Progress against these targets can be seen in the graph below:

Carbon Reduction Projects
The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2023/24 baseline. We expect to see the effects of the introduction of these initiatives in this year and beyond.
Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives
• Installation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure – We introduced on-site EV charging to support the transition to lower-emission transport and encourage staff adoption of electric vehicles. This will support future plans to electrify the Malvern Optical fleet.
• Lighting Upgrade – Replaced legacy lighting with high-efficiency LED systems in large
hangar spaces, reducing electricity consumption and improving overall energy performance.
• Enhanced Recycling Measures – Expanded recycling facilities and improved waste separation processes to reduce landfill waste.
Future Carbon Reduction Initiatives
• Solar panel installation to take advantage of the site’s extensive roof space and increase
renewable energy generation.
• Review and optimisation of plant equipment, including opportunities to consolidate or
streamline systems such as the compressor network, reducing overall energy demand.
• Electrification of the vehicle fleet to cut fuel-related emissions and transition toward cleaner transport.
• Improving the site’s EPC rating through targeted efficiency upgrades and building performance improvements.
Declaration and Sign Off
This Carbon Reduction Plan has been completed in accordance with PPN 006 and associated guidance and reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans.
Emissions have been reported and recorded in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the GHG Reporting Protocol corporate standard and uses the appropriate Government emission conversion factors for greenhouse gas company reporting.
Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been reported in accordance with SECR requirements, and the required subset of Scope 3 emissions have been reported in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard.
This Carbon Reduction Plan has been reviewed and signed off by the board of directors (or equivalent management body).
